Top Tips: Building a Digital Strategy for Education

Updated: Feb 16

Were you Inspired by the BETT Show? Thinking about your digital strategy?

Here are my top 10 tips for implementing a digital strategy successfully in the education sector:

1. Engage every stakeholder in the process – from the cleaners to the Principal/CEO. Everyone has a unique perspective and contributions to make. Engaging staff, students, parents, and local partners fosters a sense of ownership and increases the chances of successful implementation.

2. Align your digital strategy with your organisational goals - Technology should serve your mission, not the other way around. Ensure your digital initiatives support teaching, learning and operational functions rather than becoming a distraction.

3. Identify technology partnerships in your locality - What businesses can enhance your digital strategy? Sometimes, the greatest support and best ideas come from others.

4. Don't forget the IT technical team - Are they up for the challenge and is your infrastructure ready to embrace the vision for how your organisation will adopt the evolution of technology?

5. Prioritise staff training and development – A shiny new platform is only as good as the people using it. Ensure that professional development is at the heart of your strategy to build confidence and competence across all levels.

6. Keep an eye on emerging trends – Edtech is evolving rapidly. Stay informed about innovations such as AI, personalised learning and immersive technologies, but be strategic about their adoption. Not every trend is the right fit for your organisation - despite the hype!

7. Data is your best friend – Use data to drive decision-making, measure impact and continuously refine your strategy. Ensure compliance with data protection regulations, but don't let that stop you from leveraging insights to improve outcomes.

8. Foster a culture of digital resilience – Change can be challenging and resistance is inevitable. Build a culture where staff and students embrace change, adapt quickly, and see technology as an enabler rather than a barrier. The less confident sometimes become the most confident!

9. Encourage OOTB ideas – Netflix were laughed at by Blockbuster! Who's laughing now? Innovation happens when people feel empowered to think creatively without fear of failure. Foster a culture where new ideas are welcomed, no matter how weird or wacky they may seem!

10. Review, reflect, and iterate – A digital strategy is not a one-off project that will sit on the shelve or a website page; it’s an ongoing process. Regularly review progress, gather feedback, and adapt to new challenges and opportunities to keep your strategy relevant and effective.
